If youâve ever wondered,
âDo I have ADHD, anxiety, or both?â
You’re not aloneâand youâre definitely not imagining it.
These two brain gremlins love to hang out together, mimic each otherâs symptoms, and leave you feeling like a walking contradiction. đđ§
Letâs break down the chaos.
đŞď¸ ADHD and Anxiety: Same Storm, Different Lightning
ADHD and anxiety often look similar:
- Canât focus
- Racing thoughts
- Avoiding important tasks
- Overwhelmed by life
- Procrastination
- Worrying about everything
But they come from very different engines.
đ§ The ADHD Brain
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental conditionâitâs about how your brain is wired. Your executive function (aka your brain’s manager) is either on break or dancing in a different direction.
- You want to focus but canât aim it
- You mean to do the task, but it floats away
- You forget, you miss details, you chase dopamine
- Your brain says: âWe should start,â but your body says: â…meh.â
This isnât stressâitâs dysregulation (Barkley, 2015).
Studies show ADHD is linked to delays in self-regulation networks and underactivation of brain regions like the prefrontal cortex. Source
đŹ The Anxious Brain
Anxiety is a mental health condition. Itâs your brainâs fear alarm stuck on âhigh alert.â
- Youâre scanning for dangerâeven when none exists
- You overthink everything
- You imagine the worst-case scenario before doing anything
- You avoid because youâre scared, not distracted
This isnât impulsivityâitâs protection mode.
The amygdalaâyour brainâs threat detectorâis hyperactive in anxiety, constantly on the lookout for danger. Study here
𤯠Why They Get Confused
The overlap is real:
| ADHD Trait | Anxiety Twin |
|---|---|
| Task avoidance | Fear of failure |
| Poor focus | Distracted by racing thoughts |
| Restlessness | Physical tension |
| Forgetfulness | Mental overload |
| Procrastination | Perfectionism fear loop |
And guess what? Many people have both.
In fact, comorbidity between ADHD and anxiety is common, especially in adults. Reference

đŹ So Whatâs the Difference?
Think of it like this:
- ADHD says: âI forgot to do it.â
- Anxiety says: âIf I do it, I might mess it up.â
- Both say: âHelp, I canât move.â
The difference is where the freeze comes from: lack of regulation vs fear of consequences.
đ ď¸ What Can You Do?
â
If youâre not sure whatâs going on
Talk to a professional who understands both. ADHD and anxiety need different toolsâeven though they overlap.
â
If it feels like both
Thatâs OK. Many ADHDers develop anxiety over time as a response to years of overwhelm. You deserve support, not shame.
â Use strategies that help both
- Break tasks into micro steps
- Use visuals and timers
- Name your thoughts out loud
- Practice self-compassion (seriously)
TL;DR (Because brain fog is real)
- ADHD = struggle to regulate thoughts, time, and action
- Anxiety = struggle to quiet thoughts and fear
- Both can show up as avoidance, restlessness, and overwhelm
- Youâre not lazy, broken, or overdramaticâyouâre just trying to survive two tricky brains in one skull
